Chief Instructors History

Ged & John Tumman are father and son, they both started their Karate training back in 1972 under the watchful eye of Sensei Edgar Auckland, in Barnsley. Sensei Auckland has now retired, but gained his Shodan (Black Belt) under Sensei P Milner & Sensei T Suzuki in the 1960’s.

After gaining their Black Belts in 1976 Ged, John & Sensei Steve Swindle decided to open their own club in Barnsley in 1978, Kingstone Karate Club. From within the club came future Black Belts  that have gone on to open their own clubs which formed Barnsley Wado Kai with around 150 students. It was then that the group joined B.A.S.K.A. with Sensei’s Dicky Wu, Greg Wallace, Mick Dinsdale & Harvey Barker and continued to train under their guidance for many years

In that time John has travelled across Europe ( Germany, Italy, Finland, Northern & Southern Ireland) competing in both Kata and Kumite events and also nationally at the English Championships and attending squad training with the English squad. In 2004 John became the English master kata champion after 28 years of trying for an English title

Ged Gained his English Referees Qualifications & travelled across Europe officiating at tournaments and building Barnsley Wado Kai to a point that in 1989 they decided to start their own Association and the Shindo Kai Association was born.
At the present time we have 16 Clubs within the association, with around 750 members. Shindo Kai is a close knit, friendly run association.
