John & Joice Tumman along with Graham Summerfield also run self-defence classes for women & girls at most Barnsley secondary schools, women’s groups and many organisations. They are now branching out into Wakefield & Sheffield as many schools now offer the classes to girls as part of the school curriculum for year 10 & 11.
The sessions last from 6 – 12 weeks and cover every aspect of self-defence and personal safety. The courses are not just a karate class and cover many aspects of personal safety like; date rape drugs, enjoying a night out safely, looking for dangerous situations developing, assessing your surroundings, along with the usual striking points, karate strikes, boxing training.
The last session of the course involves the students putting in to practice what they have been taught. This involves the instructors putting on many layers of padding and the girls soon find out what it is like to be attacked. They must fight off the attacker with
everything they have an escape.

The girls love the last sessions, but the instructors hate them!
If you run any organisation in the Yorkshire area and are interested please look on the clubs and contact either John & Joice tumman or Graham Summerfield for information on the courses which can be e mailed out to you.
